Learning Through Education: I am deeply interested in the area of Alternative Education, specifically that of an ‘open schooling’ nature: student-directed, self-assessed, developmentally appropriate. In addition, I believe this learning style contributes positively toward a more participatory and democratic culture. However, this educational philosophy runs contrary to current mainstream education that emphasizes standardized testing in a limited number of subject areas. As part of my interest in this field, I have helped co-found a nonprofit organization called the Authentic Learning Network that promotes this open-type education practice.

Study Background

I am deeply interested in the area of Alternative Education, specifically that of an ‘open schooling’ nature: student-directed, self-assessed, developmentally appropriate. To date, none of my efforts have been financially compensated; I have participated strictly on a volunteer basis. I am interested in continuing and growing my involvement in this area and would prefer to be able to participate in a fashion that also supports me financially.

Learning Goals

  • Identify different ways to participate in education system, especially where participation might contribute to increased acceptance of alternative ways of learning/educating.
  • Identify potential involvement areas that provide financial compensation.
  • Enhance understanding of parent and student involvement in the education system; Identify other ways for parents to participate in the education system.
  • Enhance practical skills and conceptual capabilities with respect to identifying and understanding related systems.
  • Increase awareness of my specific areas of interest and potential for growth (personally and as an agent of change)
  • Create a framework for a Resource Guide about various education-related organizations, identifying the systems at work and their relationships, and other related aspects of interest – to be uncovered as I progress - to the public and specific stakeholders (e.g., parents).
  • Increase awareness of opportunities for building education communities.
  • Enhance, support, and integrate my learning across C3s curriculum, including the Mary Parker Follett class.
  • Learn to work semi-independently, with support from and support provided to other C3 Independent Study students ~ my Learning Cell (3-4 students) ~ and my advisor.
